Description
In August – or French “août” – the days are long, warm, and slow paced. The markets are full of fresh seafood and just picked produce; in the small villages’ booths are set up along the town green (or “centre-ville”) featuring every conceivable produce. It is considered impolite not to haggle over the price while sharing bits of local gossip! It is also not uncommon for lunch hour to turn into a two- or three-hour affair. Août is also the basis of a noun, “aoûtement.” Somewhat difficult to translate, aoûtement can mean the maturation of new growth on trees that can withstand the coming winter. Especially in the South of France, it means the ripening of grapes on the vine. Aoûtement is the first hint the vigneron or vintner has of the quality of the grapes and the wine they will produce.
Shiloh Manor Farm and The Polished Foxx cordially invite you to a special dinner celebrating cuisine inspired from the August sun-soaked hills of Provence, featuring the freshest local produce and imported French wine on Saturday, August 9th starting at 6:00 pm.
Our menu for the evening starts with a cocktail of Kir Royale, a mixture of crème de cassis – a sweet, dark liqueur made from blackcurrants – and champagne. For hors d’oeuvre, we are serving Coquilles Saint-Jacques, scallops and mushrooms sauteed in butter and seasoning, made even richer with Gruyère and a breadcrumb topping, caramelized to perfection and served with a chef-paired Provençal white wine. Our entrée is Bourride, an iconic, aioli-laced Provençal fish stew similar to Bouillabaisse, served with a chef-paired Provençal white or rosé. Following dinner, we are serving Punch Romaine, a “granita” or slushy made from rum, white wine, champagne and lemon and orange juices advocated by the great French chef Escoffier as a palate cleaner. And for le dessert, we are serving a classic Charlotte Malakoff almond cream cake served with coffee and tea.
During and after dinner the band Djangolaya – a trio of highly accomplished accordionist, guitarist and violin/vocalist – will perform a wide selection of popular French music from the 1920s and 1930s. French popular music of this period was heavily influenced by the work of Django Reinhart. Reinhardt introduced Gypsy jazz and swing music to France and is widely considered one of the greatest European jazz performers.
We are limiting our seating for this event to 40 guests, in part to focus on service that is as excellent as the cuisine, and to provide room for after-dinner dancing!
We hope you can join us for a fantastic gourmet 5-course French dinner with exceptional live music.
